People tend to think that shares in the large corporations are owned by many people; the highest shareholder having less that 15 percent of the shares but this is not the case. In this article David and Georgina carried out a research to find out who controls the major corporations in the world. According to the 2009 study, approximately 68.4 percent shares of world’s major corporations are owned by various forms of financial capital. Individuals or families only own 3.3 percent. The main shareholders of these corporations are banking institutions. There is a high concentration of power and resources in a few shareholders. The 30 main shareholders control more than 51.4 percent of the assets in 299 companies. Among these shareholders, 21 are private companies while 9 are government owned. The nine government agencies hold 17 percent of the total shares in 299 large corporations.
BlackRock Inc is one of the major shareholders of the large corporation. The company is not famous but owns 6.1 percent of the total shares in the 299 companies which is equivalent to 3 trillion dollars. The top 8 major shareholders own shares in more than half of the corporations which means that they have a major influence over these corporations. The financial corporations lend money to the corporations and control how they are run since they are the major shareholders. They control the share prices and determine whether the corporation will succeed or fail.
